A Letter to My First Born

To Kinley:

There are many things on my mind as we are approaching the halfway point of the arrival of your best friend. At least that is my hope. Welcoming a baby to the family is going to be an adjustment for everyone but I know most importantly it is going to be a major adjustment for you. You are going to have to share your house, your dog and cat whom you love so much, your toys and maybe the hardest part of adding a sibling is sharing the love, affection and attention of mom and dad. Our love and affection will never change for you. You might get a little less attention but that is ok, you are very independent and we will always spend time with you one on one.You are our world Kinley Reese, and always will be, and I am sure your sister will become a part of that world of ours.

We are so excited for you to be a big sister. I know you are too and you might not even know it yet. You are amazing to watch as you take care of your babies. You love to burp them, feed them and rock them, as well as make sure they are warm with a blanket. If that love you have for your babies, or the cat, is any indication of the love you will have for your sister I am overjoyed and so proud of the little girl you are becoming.

There is no need to be nervous about your sister. You are going to learn what it is like to love another, besides mom and dad of course, unconditionally. Having a sister is the most amazing thing ever! Trust me, mom knows! I have two that are pretty special. Now I know you are not always going to want to hug or kiss your sister and you might want to run away from her at times, but trust me, she is going to be your best friend eventually.

You will always be our first born and the one that stole our hearts. No one can take that away from you, EVER. I wonder how my heart can love someone as much as I love you. Though I know some how my heart will expand and your sister will fit right in. Yours will do the same Kinley.  Mommy promises you.

I promise this adjustment will get easier with time. Don't worry about things. Mommy and daddy will always love you and we will never forget about you. Leave the worrying to us. We will figure it out. We will get through it together like we do everything else.

You are going to make the BEST big sister ever and I am so excited to spend these last 22 weeks with you as our only child. You are my world, your daddy's world and pretty much everyone that has a relationship with you. You are the sweetest thing, well most of the time, and I know you will be the sweetest thing to your little sister as well.

If you are having a hard time, don't forget we love you and we are always here for you. Your sister will come and life will change. But I promise you one thing....We will NEVER stop loving you.

Love,

Mommy

  1. There may be stumbles along the way but she will learn to love and protect her sibling very quickly. We teach our children how to treat each other and there is no better way then by example. What a wonderful time you have to look forward to!

  5. That is so sweet and so important. I know when my little brother was coming, I was so nervous I wouldn't be as loved. I had been an only child for 8.5 years and didn't want to be replaced. My parents did a great job of letting me know how much they love me, and I think this letter is a good idea. Congratulations, by the way!

    1. That is great! 8.5 years is quite the difference. I have a sister 9 years younger than me but there's 2 other siblings in between. Thanks!!
